A Smarter Approach to Innovation

Managing Director of MacKenzie Construction and CECA Scotland Board member, Andy Dalrymple, has written a guest CECA Scotland blog on innovation, focusing on Mackenzie’s Smart Surface®.

“We have always believed there must be a more efficient, eco-friendly way of working and reducing the need for the conventional method of excavating and replacing material on site. After extensive research and development, Mackenzie Construction has successfully developed a process which we have called, ‘Smart Surface®’.

Smart Surface® is a superior hydraulic road binder system which stabilises existing ground conditions to create or repair paths, roads and hard standings. Where sufficient material exists on site, it is possible to have zero importation of aggregate (e.g. Type 1 and zero off-site disposal of waste), which greatly reduces the environmental footprint of projects.

The binder is manufactured in the UK under ISO 9001, 14001 and 15001 standards and the process involves the use of bespoke plant, which scarifies the existing surface. It adds the binder, mixes with water and, when compacted, leaves a high spec road surface.  The road surface finish itself is down to the client and further decorative dressings can be added as per their requirements. However, using the existing material on site provides a natural rural effect on the finished surface.

We have carried out several successful demonstrations for clients to assist with contracts being awarded.  It is this leap of faith, which we require from the client, that allows us to demonstrate not only the strength and efficiency this product can deliver, but also the outstanding carbon footprint reduction and cost savings it can offer.

Clients already engaged with Smart Surface® include: Resource Efficient Solutions, Scottish Power, Scottish Water, Scottish Canals, South Lanarkshire Council, Central Scotland Green Network Trust, Paths for All and Landmarc.

We have found that by focusing on innovation such as Smart Surface®, we can create real and tangible benefits for our business, our clients and our supply chain.

As a company we bring a progressive approach, new skills and growth to our business while contributing to reduced carbon, reduced waste and costs for our clients, and the communities we operate in.

For Mackenzie Construction, working in close collaboration with Eco-Fast to nurture and launch Smart Surface® into the market place has been a revelation! And why wouldn’t it be? The benefits are clear; from the environmental credentials and cost efficiencies to the turnaround of on-site installations, we know that this will be the first-choice solution for many of our clients”.
