As we continue shining a light on The Projects That Built Scotland, North Kyle Wind Farm stands out as a powerful example of how engineering can transform a landscape and reshape a community’s future. Once a vast open cast coal mine, the site has been reimagined into a 49‑turbine wind farm delivering 220.5 MW of clean energy, enough to power more than 183,000 homes a year.
Led by Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK for Brockwell Energy Limited, the project combines innovation with low‑carbon thinking at every stage. North Kyle is the first wind farm in the UK to use dynamic compaction to prepare turbine foundations, and on‑site quarrying produced 900,000 tonnes of aggregate alongside 26,000m³ of concrete batched on site. These choices reduced transport emissions, supported restoration of the former industrial landscape and enabled efficient construction across challenging ground.
Its impact reaches well beyond engineering. The project created opportunities for 356 people, including apprentices and trainees, with 41% of the workforce drawn from the local area. It also celebrated a significant milestone of 500,000 hours without a lost‑time incident — a testament to the collaboration and care shown across the site.
With £65 million set to be delivered in community benefits over the next 40 years, North Kyle is a lasting example of how civil engineering can support local economies, regenerate damaged land and contribute to Scotland’s long‑term renewable future.
As we continue highlighting 'The Projects That Built Scotland' we’re turning our focus to a piece of modern infrastructure that’s reshaped how people move through our capital. The Edinburgh Trams project, and in particular the extension from York Place to Newhaven, has played a central role in connecting communities, supporting local businesses, and easing pressure on the city’s busiest streets.
In this video, Robert Armstrong, Senior Interface Manager from The City of Edinburgh Council reflects on the journey from the early days of phase one, which prioritised linking the airport with the city centre, to the completion of the Newhaven extension. Phase one wasn’t without challenges, but it delivered a vital transport link at a time when visitor numbers were rising and congestion in the city centre was becoming increasingly difficult to manage. Extending the route through Leith and down to the waterfront has helped bring tram services right into one of the city’s most densely populated and fastest‑growing areas.
Today the line is doing exactly what it was built to do, supporting economic growth, helping residents travel more sustainably and aligning with Edinburgh’s wider mobility plans to reduce car use and ease congestion. From new businesses opening along the route to better access for visitors and communities alike, the tram network continues to shape the future of how Edinburgh moves.
